Indonesian Lawmaker Urges National Disaster Status for Forest Fires
Forest and land fires have burned for about three months in parts of Indonesia, with thick smoke affecting communities in Kalimantan.
Daniel Johan, a lawmaker from the PKB party, says the smoke threatens public health and disrupts flights, schools, daily activities and the local economy.
Government figures cited by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya say crews are still putting out fires on about 639 hectares across six provinces: West, Central and South Kalimantan, South Sumatra, Riau and Jambi.
Johan says the government’s efforts have not yet produced significant results.
He is urging President Prabowo Subianto to declare the fires a national disaster, which he says would help direct more funding to firefighting and affected residents.
He also supports accepting help from other countries and moving children and older people to places free from smoke.
The sources do not say whether the government will adopt these proposals.

He said fires in Kalimantan had continued for three months and smoke was disrupting health, flights, schools, daily activities and the economy.

What people are saying
The current conditions are on the verge of being very dangerous for public health; three months of fires have been like living in hell for affected people.
With this situation already lasting three months, the government must take strategic steps, one of which is to designate these fires as a national disaster.
We also need foreign assistance; we are not closing ourselves off, this does not show that the government is weak, but this is a very large problem with cross-border impacts that requires regional cooperation.
