Han Jun-hee says taking risks helps tell compelling stories
Korean writer-director Han Jun-hee spoke at a Netflix masterclass during the Busan International Film Festival.
He said filmmakers need to take risks to make stories interesting, and that playing it safe can itself be risky.
Han has worked on series including D.P., about military police pursuing deserters, and Weak Hero Class, about bullying and violence at school.
He said stories about the military or school life can reach wider audiences because people may connect through family ties or shared experiences.
Han also said bringing in new directors can help a project succeed.
Two series he is involved in, The Blue Road and Dead-End Job, are set to premiere in the festival’s On Screen section.

Han discussed how he approached stories that might seem unfamiliar or appeal only to a limited audience.
He said familiar emotions and a clear message can help connect such stories with viewers.
Han is involved in two series premiering in the festival’s On Screen section: The Blue Road and Dead-End Job.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
There has to be risk for something to be interesting. Only if you take risks can you tell an interesting story.
We can’t be prejudiced or biased. Whatever the story, I don’t think there’s a topic we can’t cover in a series or film.
If you have a message you want to convey to the audience, what is it you want to say? That is the most important part of filmmaking.
