Self-published books earn little but help publishers spot trends

Some authors publish their books online without using a traditional publisher; they are known as self-publishers.

Their books bring in about 4 billion francs worldwide, or 2 to 5 percent of the global book market.

Although the business is small, self-published writers can help reveal what readers are interested in.

Established publishers watch these trends and may sign authors writing in promising areas.

Erika Mitchell, who writes as E.L. James, first self-published “Fifty Shades of Grey” before signing with a large publisher.

The series has since sold 125 million copies, but very few self-published authors achieve comparable success, and many cannot live on their book earnings.

Some companies charge authors thousands of francs to help them self-publish, while an authors’ association offers free support.
