US Treasury chief Scott Bessent to skip IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will not attend next week’s annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok.
US officials said he has domestic commitments, but did not specify what they are.
Deputy Treasury Secretary Francis Brooke and Undersecretary for International Affairs Erin Browne will lead the US delegation.
The meetings come as US Treasury bond yields have risen to their highest levels in nearly 25 years, while an energy crisis linked to the war in the Middle East has slowed global growth.
The US delegation says it will discuss economic policies, structural imbalances and sovereign debt, including ways to help countries facing debt problems regain stability and growth.
Bessent’s absence may disappoint officials from other countries who use the meetings to arrange formal and informal bilateral talks.
He is expected to attend the G20 leaders’ summit in Miami in December.
