Gulshan Devaiah says violent films do not define all of Bollywood
Actor Gulshan Devaiah says Bollywood still makes films for different audiences, despite the attention given to violent, high-energy hits.
He is promoting Little Thomas, a family film about a curious boy who wants a younger brother.
Devaiah says the success and large earnings of mass entertainers can make it seem as though the whole industry is shifting toward violence.
He compares today’s mix of films with the 1970s and 1980s, when Amitabh Bachchan’s angry-young-man roles and Amol Palekar’s more ordinary characters both found audiences.
India’s varied audiences, he says, allow films with different styles to coexist.
He also argues that a film can succeed without earning hundreds of crores, because its return compared with its cost matters.
Little Thomas is one example of a family-oriented story alongside larger, more violent releases.
Gulshan Devaiah says the impression that Bollywood is shifting entirely towards violent films is an illusion.
He argues that films for different audiences and across genres have always coexisted.
Devaiah points to Amitabh Bachchan’s popular “angry young man” roles and Amol Palekar’s “average young man” roles in the 1970s and 1980s as examples.
His upcoming family film, Little Thomas, is about a curious boy who wants a younger brother.
Devaiah says the attention given to the large earnings of mass entertainers can make them seem more dominant than they are.
