Polls put Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of Lula before Brazil runoff

Two polls conducted after Brazil’s first-round election put Senator Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

They show Bolsonaro with just over 52% of valid votes, compared with about 47% to 48% for Lula.

In the first round, Bolsonaro received 47.03% of valid votes and Lula received 45.16%.

The runoff is scheduled for October 25, with few voters saying they are undecided.

The candidates have different regional strongholds: Bolsonaro did best in the South, Southeast, Center-West and North, while Lula led in the Northeast.

Their campaigns are working to win supporters from the other side and reduce non-voting.

The polls were conducted before runoff campaign advertising and major debates, so further surveys will show whether Bolsonaro’s lead holds.
