PL weighs when to propose amnesty for Jair Bolsonaro

Brazil’s Liberal Party, known as the PL, is weighing when to propose amnesty for former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Some Bolsonaro allies believe it may be better to wait until 2027.

The timing is being discussed alongside elections in February 2027 for the leadership of Brazil’s lower house and Senate.

The PL expects to have at least 121 federal deputies and 28 senators, but would need to negotiate with other parties to secure support.

For now, the party is focused on the presidential prospects of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and the outcome of the election’s second round on October 25.

Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison in a case involving an alleged coup plot.

He is currently serving his sentence under house arrest in Brasília.

The PL has not said when it will present an amnesty proposal.
