Brazil’s PL party rules out backing Hugo Motta for another term as speaker

Brazil’s Liberal Party, known as the PL, is not currently planning to back Hugo Motta for another term as speaker of the lower house in 2027.

Motta is a member of the Republicanos party and currently leads the Chamber of Deputies.

The PL is open to negotiating with centrist parties and may support a candidate from outside its own ranks for speaker.

It wants to secure the Senate presidency for its member Rogério Marinho, and party members believe it is unlikely to win control of both houses of Congress.

The Senate is a priority for Bolsonaro supporters, who want to advance impeachment requests against justices of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court.

They object to Motta’s support for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election.

Republicanos, meanwhile, intends to continue backing Motta’s bid next year.
