Italian army chief says humans must retain life-and-death decisions in war
Gen.
Carmine Masiello, chief of staff of the Italian Army, said a human must remain responsible for decisions over life and death in war.
He spoke at a meeting aboard the ship Vespucci.
Masiello said warfare and international situations have changed, partly because of new technology.
He pointed to drones and other devices increasingly used in conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.
He said Italian soldiers are being trained to work with these technologies.
But he said the army’s values mean that a person, not technology, must stay at the center of decisions about whether another person lives or dies.
The statement set out Masiello’s position; no further action was described.
