More than 50 women prepare to contest Baringo seats in 2027
More than 50 women in Baringo County, Kenya, are preparing to run for elective office in the 2027 elections.
More than 35 are interested in the woman representative seat, dozens are considering county assembly seats, at least six are preparing to contest parliamentary seats, and one is considering a Senate run.
The women discussed their plans and the risks they face at a forum in Kabarnet organised by the Gender Violence Recovery Centre.
They say high campaign costs, limited access to political networks and resources, cultural expectations and gender-based violence discourage women from seeking office.
Baringo has never elected a woman governor or senator, and only two women have been elected as MPs.
The aspirants say they want voters to judge them on their ideas and ability to serve, rather than their age, marital status or appearance.
They see the 2027 election as a chance to challenge the county’s political history.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
Some people perceive that women are not serious when contesting seats and are just vying for positions to get nominated by their parties. That is not true. We are spending money, time and going to the villages.
Some of us feel that it is time for leadership to change for young people. We no longer want to sit back and complain but be part of the solution.
If we instead bring the conversation to be issues-based and stop attacking women and body-shaming those seeking elective seats, we can focus on what we can do to change the community and address the issues affecting the people.
