Rights groups and embassies urge Nigeria to abolish the death penalty

Nigeria has not carried out a state execution for nearly 10 years, but more than 3,000 people are still on death row.

The National Human Rights Commission and several foreign embassies want Nigeria to formally stop executions and end the death penalty.

They argue that it can cause irreversible harm if courts make mistakes.

They also say death sentences affect poor people disproportionately.
