GOCOP seeks court guidance on election reporting ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 polls
The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) wants a court to clarify how Nigeria’s election law applies to media coverage before the 2027 general elections.
It says the court should consider Section 60 of the Electoral Act 2026 alongside the constitution’s protection of freedom of expression.
The question is how those rules apply when media outlets publish exit polls, election projections and independent result tallies.
GOCOP also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to share timely information about preparations, logistics, technology tests and results management.
It proposed a digital channel for editors to check reports about polling places, security and technical problems before publication.
The guild warned that fake news and AI-generated deepfakes could damage trust in the election, and urged publishers to verify information.
It said its executive council would discuss the proposals with INEC, while calling for election laws and voter information to be made accessible in local languages and to people with disabilities.
