Orangutan Novita loses four toe segments after surviving Indonesian fires
Novita, a young orangutan, survived a wildfire in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.
She was found on a tree on September 26 after fire and smoke had trapped her in the area.
She had serious burns on her hands and feet and was taken to the Nyaru Menteng rehabilitation centre for treatment.
Doctors amputated four segments of her toes because the burns had badly damaged them.
Her condition is beginning to improve, but she remains in intensive care and her recovery will take time.
The fires also threaten orangutans through smoke, and 47 orangutans at the rehabilitation centre have been diagnosed with respiratory infections, described as mild so far.
Novita's health will be assessed day by day as her medical team continues to monitor her.
