Sesshu Garden illumination begins in Yamaguchi through Nov. 23

Joeiji Temple’s Sesshu Garden is lit for autumn evenings in Yamaguchi, a city in western Japan.

The illumination began Oct.

10 and runs from 6 to 9 p.m.

on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through Nov.

23.

The garden is a national historic site and place of scenic beauty, with ponds and stones set against wooded hills.

It is said to have been designed by the painter Sesshu in the 15th century, after a local feudal lord ordered its construction.

Colored lights and quiet music evoke Sesshu’s journeys and the seasons, while images of his work are projected inside the temple’s main hall.

The event is part of a tourism campaign led by West Japan Railway, the Yamaguchi prefectural government and others, and gives visitors a chance to see the garden after dark.
