US calls China's actions off Taiwan deeply destabilising

China has increased coast guard patrols off Taiwan's east coast since June.

A Chinese militia boat was reportedly seen there in August for the first time.

Taiwan says China may be practicing for a blockade, but that is not confirmed.

The US says the activity raises tensions and has urged Beijing to talk with Taiwan's elected leaders.
