Patrick Henry case marked a turning point in France’s death penalty debate

In January 1976, seven-year-old Philippe Bertrand was kidnapped on his way home from school in Troyes, France.

Police later found his body under the bed of Patrick Henry, who was arrested for the crime.

At the time, France still used the guillotine, and Henry faced the death penalty.

Many people outside the courthouse called for him to be executed.

His defence lawyer, Robert Badinter, had vowed to work to prevent anyone from being put to death.

Henry was not sentenced to death at his 1977 trial, which became a turning point in the debate over capital punishment in France.

France abolished the death penalty four years later.
