De Luca says he would vote for himself in centre-left primary
Vincenzo De Luca, the mayor of Salerno in southern Italy and a former regional governor, spoke at an event in Florence.
Asked whom he would support in a centre-left primary between Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte, he said he would vote for himself.
He then said he had not discussed a role with anyone and that being mayor was more gratifying to him.
De Luca also criticized the formation of new parties and movements, saying they fragment Italian politics and create opportunities for people to obtain positions.
He argued that the left should treat public safety as a concern as important as work.
He called for a broad coalition government lasting 10 years to reform the state, including health care, taxation and public administration.
He did not announce a candidacy or say what he would do next.
