AK Party candidate elected Ataşehir deputy mayor

Serdar Orhan, an AK Party candidate, was elected deputy mayor of Ataşehir, a district of Istanbul.

The vote followed changes in the make-up of the district council during a corruption investigation involving district municipalities.

The CHP group did not attend the meeting, leaving Orhan as the only candidate.

Eighteen council members from the governing alliance voted for him, while two independent members cast blank ballots in the first round.

Orhan won in the fourth round with 18 votes.

His election shifted control of Ataşehir municipality to the AK Party.

The AK Party’s Istanbul leader said the party planned to focus on public services, including youth and sports centers, over the next two and a half years.
