Chongqing expands electric car exports through rail and sea routes

Chongqing is expanding exports of its electric cars as it seeks to reach more overseas markets.

The inland city uses rail lines, shipping routes and connections such as the China-Europe freight train and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor to move vehicles abroad.

In 2025, Chongqing’s car exports rose 28.7% from the previous year and reached 164 countries and regions.

Changan showcased its electric vehicle brands at the Paris Motor Show, which opened on October 12, 2026.

The company says it has eight subsidiaries in Europe and plans local production capacity of 180,000 vehicles by 2028 and 350,000 by 2030.

Tougher green trade rules and gaps in local operations pose challenges, including rules on battery regulation and carbon footprints, as well as the need to build brands and after-sales services overseas.

Chongqing aims to shift from exporting cars to building global brands and expand its international sales and service networks.
