LVMH sales miss expectations as Chinese demand weakens

LVMH reported lower-than-expected third-quarter sales growth on Monday, as demand for its brands weakened.

The French luxury group owns Louis Vuitton and Dior, two brands affected by softer spending.

Sales excluding currency changes rose 1% to €18.5 billion, below analysts’ expected 1.3% growth.

Fashion and leather goods sales fell 5%, a sharper drop than analysts had forecast.

Sales in Asia, where China dominates, fell 5%, while sales in the United States rose 5%.

Weaker Chinese consumer confidence is weighing on luxury demand, after years in which Chinese shoppers helped drive the industry’s growth.

The results add to concerns about a recovery in the luxury market, which has been in a three-year slowdown.
