French anti-terrorism prosecutors take over investigation into Aubagne school shooting
A student is suspected of firing at his principal and three teachers at a middle school in Aubagne, southern France, on Monday morning.
France’s anti-terrorism prosecutors have taken over the investigation, which is examining attempted murder linked to a terrorist enterprise and terrorist conspiracy.
The prosecutors said early checks of the teenager’s digital devices point to his possible involvement in the True Crime Community, an online network they say glorifies mass killers and can encourage extreme violence.
Investigators are also examining whether the attack was connected to that ideology.
A source close to the case said the teenager acted out of revenge, had no specific target and did not intend to attack pupils.
He was in ninth grade at Lakanal Middle School and had been called in by the school several times over disruptive behaviour.
The investigation is continuing.
