French navy boards sanctioned tanker DF Peak near Réunion

French President Emmanuel Macron said the French navy boarded the tanker DF Peak on Monday in the Indian Ocean.

The vessel was more than 450 nautical miles south of Réunion, a French island.

It flies a Benin flag and is on the European Union’s sanctions list.

France suspects it of illegal oil smuggling, while Macron said the ship may have been sailing under a false flag.

The tanker is linked to the Russian shadow fleet, a network of ships used to get around Western sanctions imposed after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

The boarding shows France’s effort to enforce sanctions, though Russia has called such actions piracy and banditry.

The sources do not say what will happen to the ship or its cargo next.
