Train fire disrupts Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line, affecting thousands

A fire broke out in the rear locomotive of a Renfe high-speed train near Ricla, in Zaragoza province, on Monday afternoon.

The train was travelling from Madrid to Figueres, and its 283 passengers were evacuated; no one was reported injured.

The fire stopped traffic on the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line for about five hours during the return from the Pilar holiday weekend.

Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo services were affected, with passengers delayed, stranded or unable to depart.

Estimates of the total number affected differ: one account put it at 12,000, while another estimated more than 19,500.

The cause of the fire was not known, and the damaged train had yet to be removed.

Adif allowed trains to resume gradually on a single track between Ricla and Plasencia de Jalón while the train is removed.
