Three people die in apartment building fire in Bochum
A fire broke out in an apartment building in Bochum-Hofstede, in western Germany, around 4:15 a.m.
on Tuesday.
Firefighters found three adults dead in one apartment; attempts to revive them failed.
Smoke made the stairwell, the building’s main escape route, impassable, and five residents were rescued through windows.
Five people were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospitals.
The fire badly damaged the wooden stairwell, leaving the building unfit to live in; residents of nearby buildings also could not return at first because their power supply was shut off.
Police and prosecutors are investigating the cause, which remains unclear; police are also checking whether an earlier dispute at the building was connected.
Residents are staying with family or friends, while one person was placed in accommodation by the social services office.
