IAEA says Pakistan has a robust nuclear security regime

The International Atomic Energy Agency says Pakistan has a strong system for protecting nuclear materials and facilities.

A seven-member IAEA team carried out its first physical protection advisory mission in Pakistan from September 28 to October 9, at the government’s request.

The team reviewed the country’s laws and regulations and assessed protections at a facility in Karachi.

It also visited the site of Pakistan’s first nuclear power plant, which closed in 2021 and is being decommissioned.

The IAEA said it found good practices, while also making recommendations to improve security rules and procedures.

The mission gives Pakistan expert advice and a baseline for further work on nuclear security.

The IAEA said this was the 112th mission under the programme, which began in 1995.
