Zemeckis and Hanks once feared Forrest Gump would fail

Director Robert Zemeckis and actor Tom Hanks feared Forrest Gump might flop because they were unsure audiences would enjoy its story of an ordinary man recounting extraordinary events.

The 1994 film follows Forrest as he tells his life story while sitting on a bench.

Zemeckis even considered cutting those bench scenes, which became central to the film.

Tom Hanks paid for the cross-country running scene after Paramount refused to fund it because of its cost.

The film went on to earn nearly $680 million worldwide and six Oscars, including a second consecutive best actor award for Hanks.

Its success turned it into a lasting classic, and it is currently available on Paramount+.
