Scarlett Johansson’s Glasgow-set Under the Skin returns to London cinema
Jonathan Glazer’s film Under the Skin is screening in London at the ICA on 24 October.
The 2013 film stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien who hunts men in Glasgow.
The film was adapted from Michel Faber’s 2000 novel, whose alien protagonist is sent to Earth to harvest human flesh.
Glazer’s version strips back the book’s explanations and dialogue, making Johansson’s character a mostly silent observer.
Johansson approached ordinary men in Glasgow while hidden cameras filmed, helping create the film’s unsettling effect.
The role also works because Johansson was already famous, while her presence seems out of place in everyday Glasgow.
The London screening is part of a festival marking The Independent’s 40th anniversary.

What people are saying
I remember seeing her walking along the street in a pink jumper on a long lens and she looks like an exotic insect on the wrong continent.
None of us knew how it was going to work.
We toyed with lots of different things like prosthetics, teeth, all kinds of things that would change my face but only slightly, when in fact there was no need to do any of that.
