Nicolas Cage says he has not signed on for a third National Treasure film

Nicolas Cage says he has not agreed to return for a third National Treasure film.

Director Jon Turteltaub had said in August that the film would go ahead with Cage in the lead role.

Cage disputed that claim at New York Comic Con, saying he had not signed on.

He said his return would depend on the story, and joked that he would make a film about treasure hunter Ben Gates pursuing the Jeffrey Epstein files.

The original National Treasure films are adventure stories about Gates, a treasure hunter; the source says the franchise earned $806 million worldwide.

No third film has been confirmed with Cage, and the possible story idea is not known to be Turteltaub’s plan.

Whether the two men agree on a project remains uncertain.
