Ten killed in fight at prison in Mexico’s Sinaloa state

A fight broke out during family visiting hours Thursday at El Castillo prison in Mazatlan, in northwestern Mexico’s Sinaloa state.

Nine inmates and one family visitor, who authorities said was a minor, were killed, and 16 inmates were injured.

Security forces entered the prison to restore order, and officials said it was under control.

Visits have been suspended as a precaution, while social workers are contacting the families of those killed.

Sinaloa has faced violence linked to a power struggle between factions of the Sinaloa drug cartel since September 2024.

Authorities have not said whether the prison violence was connected to that conflict or how the deaths occurred.

Analysts have linked violence in Mexican prisons to overcrowding, pretrial detention and insufficient staff.
