Mexico remains suspended from EITI transparency review process

Mexico remains suspended from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative’s review process.

The initiative sets standards for transparency in oil, gas and mining, and brings governments, companies and civil society together to disclose information about natural resources.

Mexico joined in 2017.

In 2022, the EITI gave Mexico 49.5 out of 100 and found that it only partly met requirements for civil-society participation.

The review noted progress in oil and gas transparency but identified gaps in mining and in disclosures about contracts, revenues, company ownership and other areas.

The suspension reflects insufficient stakeholder participation, limited progress and missed reporting deadlines; it does not mean Mexico has left the initiative or been expelled.

Mexico can regain full standing after it addresses the problems and a new review verifies the changes.
