Hop harvest in Xinjiang rises with new growing methods
Workers are harvesting hops at the 27th Regiment in Xinjiang, in northwestern China.
Hops are a key local crop, and the harvest is being processed quickly because fresh hops do not keep for long.
A local company dries and packs the crop before sending it to beer producers, including customers in Qingdao and Guangdong.
This year, the farm introduced a taller trellis system that improves airflow and light for the plants.
The farm says yields rose from 900 kilograms per unit of land to as much as 1.3 tonnes, while labor costs fell by 30% to 40%.
Growers also use a mix of machine and manual harvesting, and one farmer said her yield was higher than last year.
The crop supports local incomes and supplies ingredients to breweries.
A new 3.5-metre elevated growing method at a farm in Xinjiang has raised hop yields and reduced labour costs.
The method improved airflow and light in the fields and substantially reduced pest and disease incidence.
The reported yield rose from 900 kilograms to 1.3 tonnes per mu, an increase of 30%.
Harvesting and processing were under way at the farm on October 9.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
I planted 21 mu of hops this year, and my yield is higher than last year, reaching 1.1 tonnes per mu. At the ordered purchase price of 2.5 yuan per kilogram, my income this year will reach more than 100,000 yuan.
The company can process and dry about 10 tonnes of hops a day, and the products are mainly sold to major beer producers in Qingdao, Guangdong and other places.
