EU plans four-year cap on hybrid vehicle imports, starting at 350,000

EU plans four-year cap on hybrid vehicle imports, starting at 350,000

The European Union plans to limit hybrid vehicle imports under a safeguard measure that could start on December 1.

The cap would be 350,000 vehicles in the first year.

It would rise by 6% each year from the second year onward, and the measure would last four years.

Although the plan concerns Chinese hybrids, the cap would apply to hybrid imports from all countries to comply with World Trade Organization rules against discrimination.

The EU and China would commit to following those rules during the measure.

The plan matters because it would set a limit on how many hybrid vehicles can be imported into the EU.

The stated start date is possible, not certain.
