Kenya’s First Ebola Patient Travelled Through DR Congo and Uganda Undetected
A 40-year-old Kenyan businessman became Kenya’s first confirmed Ebola patient after arriving seriously ill at a Nairobi hospital.
He had spent weeks travelling in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a major Ebola outbreak was under way, and also travelled through Uganda.
He sought medical care in the Congo while experiencing symptoms including fever and a skin rash, but was not diagnosed with Ebola.
Airport health screenings in Uganda and Kenya also failed to identify his infection; health officials said his temperature may have been masked by medication.
He died two days after reaching Nairobi, and the exact place where he contracted Ebola remains unknown.
The missed detection matters because he travelled through several towns and cities while ill, creating possible exposure to other people.
Authorities have mapped his movements and begun tracing contacts, while Kenya has activated its emergency operations centre and a national task force.
A 40-year-old Kenyan businessman became Kenya’s first confirmed Ebola case after travelling through the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda while ill.
He sought medical care in the DRC from around 17 September, but was diagnosed with a skin infection and was not tested for Ebola during his travels.
He flew from Entebbe, Uganda, to Nairobi on 3 October and died at Nairobi Hospital two days later.
Health officials said his temperature was recorded as normal during airport screenings, and Africa CDC said medication may have masked a fever.
Nearly 70 potential contacts were placed under quarantine in Nairobi, while Kenyan authorities activated a public health emergency operations centre and a national task force.
