24 South Koreans arrested in Nepal over religious program on tourist visas

Nepalese police arrested 24 South Koreans who took part in a religious training program in eastern Nepal.

They were visiting on tourist visas, which do not permit religious education or missionary work in Nepal.

The program was held at New Covenant College, a Christian institution in Morang district.

The college has support from a South Korea-based Christian missionary organization.

Police reportedly determined that some activities may have breached the visa rules.

South Korea’s foreign ministry said it is in close contact with Nepalese authorities through its embassy in Nepal.

The investigation is ongoing, and the ministry has not released further details to protect the individuals’ privacy.
