Female elephant dies after becoming trapped in slush at Erode reservoir
A wild female elephant, estimated to be 35 to 40 years old, died at Gunderipallam reservoir in Erode district, Tamil Nadu.
It became trapped in slush while coming to the reservoir to drink on the night of October 10.
The reservoir’s water level had fallen after months of inadequate rainfall, leaving parts of its edge muddy.
Forest staff and fire and rescue personnel used ropes, belts and vehicles, including an excavator, to free the animal.
It was too exhausted to stand, so a veterinary team gave it injections and glucose while forest staff monitored it overnight.
The elephant died in the early hours of October 12, before rescuers could resume their work that morning.
Officials said they would conduct a post-mortem examination and then bury the carcass.
