10 Horror Movies Praised for Their Gripping Opening Scenes

A list published on Oct.

11 highlights 10 horror movies that pull viewers in during their opening minutes.

It argues that horror needs to build suspense quickly and give audiences a reason to care about what happens to the characters.

One example is Friday the 13th Part 2, in which Alice, the survivor of the first film, is killed at home by Jason Voorhees.

The list also praises Ghost Ship for an opening scene in which a snapped cable kills people aboard an ocean liner, while young Katie Harwood watches.

In Final Destination, a group of high school students board a plane for a trip to France, and the aircraft explodes.

The film’s premise treats death itself as the threat, and the list notes that it led to a continuing franchise.
