Three films by Chinese women directors join Parallax Films’ sales slate
Parallax Films has added new projects by Chinese directors Shao Yihui, Yang Lina and Yin Lichuan to its sales slate.
The company is presenting them to buyers at the Asian Contents & Film Market in Busan.
Shao’s short film “Winning at Sleep” satirizes competition, while Yang’s “It’s OK” follows a young teacher facing a health crisis and a complicated bond with her mother.
Yin’s feature “A Joke” follows a sanitation worker who gathers evidence against an abusive boss and teams up with a lawyer to expose him.
The films arrive during a rise in interest in stories about women and social pressure in China.
Yin’s “Like a Rolling Stone” and Shao’s “Her Story” earned more than RMB845 million combined at China’s domestic box office, and “Her Story” won three Golden Rooster Awards.
Parallax says young female audiences have helped show that these films can attract large audiences, encouraging more investment in women-led projects.
The company has recently made distribution deals in Europe, North America and Asia, and “Masayume” is scheduled for a North American release in spring 2027.
