The 28th Rio Film Festival gave its top fiction award to “The Riverbank” and its top documentary award to “Elza.”

The ceremony took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Directed by Enock Carvalho and Matheus Farias, “The Riverbank” is set in Recife and follows a young cleaner who meets a fisherman as he searches for intimacy.

The film also won awards for cinematography, sound and supporting actress, and received the festival’s Felix Prize for LGBTQIA+ films.

Eryk Rocha’s “Elza” uses archival material and the singer’s own voice to tell the story of Elza Soares and her career.

Other winners included “Santo” for best short film and “On Behalf of My Son,” which received the audience award for fiction feature.

The festival’s official programme has ended, though additional screenings are scheduled during the week.
