Senator meets Tenancingo mayor facing charges over alleged staged kidnapping
Higinio Martínez, who leads the Senate’s governing board, met Nancy Nápoles, the mayor of Tenancingo in Mexico State.
Nápoles shared a video of the meeting at the Senate on October 9.
She is facing a criminal case over allegations that she staged her own kidnapping.
She had reported being kidnapped on May 31 and said her captors demanded 40 million pesos in ransom.
Prosecutors allege the plan was intended to justify a 40 million-peso shortfall in the town’s finances, and say relatives and other people were involved.
A judge formally opened a case against Nápoles in July, but she remains free while the process is conditionally suspended for six months; this is not a conviction.
Her party, Morena, has also begun a review that could affect her party rights.
