India and Africa highlight self-reliance and development cooperation
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, spoke about India’s partnership with African countries at the Adwa Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He said both sides share goals that include industrialisation, fairness and greater ability to shape their own futures.
He described self-reliance as a foundation of the partnership and said development projects should reflect the priorities of partner countries.
India has supported more than 220 projects in areas including electricity, water, agriculture, railways and healthcare, Jaishankar said.
He also said India had supported more than 70,000 African students and professionals over the past decade.
Cooperation also includes trade and investment, digital services, space, drones, artificial intelligence and health, including vaccine support and cancer treatment machines.
Jaishankar said technology and innovation would have a greater role in India’s strategic partnership with Ethiopia.
S. Jaishankar said India and Africa shared a commitment to self-reliance and to shaping their own development.
Speaking in Addis Ababa, he called industrialisation a shared priority and said it should not be undermined by cheap imports or restricted market access.
He highlighted trade and investment ties across sectors including manufacturing, energy, agriculture and technology.
