Nigeria extends space-based intelligence support to military operations

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered the Defence Space Administration to extend space-based intelligence and surveillance support to military operations in the North-west and North-central.

The directive was given in Abuja during the agency’s 12th anniversary.

The support already assists Operation Hadin Kai in the North-east, and is expected to help joint forces in Operation Fansan Yamma in the North-west and Operation Savannah Shield in the North-central.

Space-based capabilities can provide intelligence, surveillance and communications that help troops understand conditions and coordinate operations.

The Defence Space Administration says it has developed these capabilities since its establishment in 2014, including Nigeria’s military satellite DELSAT-1, launched in 2022.

Oluyede also urged the agency to develop local expertise and technology, and a former defence chief said strengthening space-based intelligence will require sustained investment.
