DA urges eThekwini voters to back it over smaller parties
The DA is urging eThekwini voters not to back smaller parties, saying this could help the MK Party take control of the metro.
EThekwini is KwaZulu-Natal’s only metro, and the contest is part of the 4 November local government elections.
A Sabi Strategy Group poll puts the MK Party at 43% support, the DA at 30% and the ANC at 11%.
An Ipsos poll gives the MK Party a bigger lead, with 55% compared with 17% for the DA, 10% for the ANC and 6% for the IFP.
The DA says only a party large enough to qualify for the executive committee can take part in electing a mayor, and argues that smaller parties cannot meet that threshold.
The MK Party is contesting municipal elections for the first time since it was formed in 2023, after becoming the largest party in KwaZulu-Natal in the 2024 provincial and national elections.
Voters will choose the metro’s next leaders on 4 November, but the polls offer different estimates of the parties’ support.

What people are saying
What the polling shows is that the DA is now the only party big enough to stop an MKP mayor in eThekwini, which would be disastrous for the city and its residents which has suffered so much already.
The polling also shows that no other party will be big enough to challenge the MKP to make any meaningful difference.
