Eyüpsultan acting mayor vote disputed after invalid ballot

Cafer Parlak was elected Eyüpsultan’s acting mayor in a fourth-round vote in the Istanbul district.

The vote followed a disputed third round on 10 October, when officials announced an 18-18 tie between Parlak and Muhammet Çakır.

A ballot cast for Çakır was ruled invalid, and Parlak then won the fourth round with 19 votes.

The AK Party’s Istanbul provincial chair said five CHP council members had voted for Çakır in the third round, making the result 19-18 in his view.

The AK Party disputes the invalid-ballot decision and says it will pursue legal action over the result.

The party’s Eyüpsultan district office also released video and alleged that some CHP council members were pressured to leave the chamber; the reason they left remains unclear.

The election outcome may now face a legal challenge over the third-round ballot ruling.
