US removes sanctions on daughter of Myanmar businessman
The United States has removed Theint Win Htet, a Myanmar national, from its sanctions list.
Her father founded the Shwe Byain Phyu Group, which the US Treasury said supplied fuel to Myanmar’s military and had close ties to its leadership.
The US imposed sanctions on the group and the family in 2024, after Myanmar’s military seized power in a 2021 coup.
Win Htet argued in a new court complaint that she had no active role in her father’s business and said the restrictions affected her bank accounts, US credit cards and studies.
She filed the complaint in July, and her lawyer withdrew it after the US delisted her.
The decision came as the Trump administration reportedly opened talks with Myanmar’s military-installed government, though it is unclear whether the talks led to the delisting.
The change matters amid continued conflict in Myanmar, which followed the coup and has killed an estimated 100,000 people and displaced more than 3.5 million.
The United States removed Theint Win Htet from its sanctions list on Friday, according to the Treasury Department’s website.
The daughter of Myanmar businessman Thein Win Zaw had filed a new lawsuit seeking removal from the list in July.
She argued that she had no active role in her father’s business and said the sanctions disrupted her studies and restricted her financial access.
The Treasury had sanctioned her family in January 2024, saying the family’s companies were closely associated with Myanmar’s military.
Justice For Myanmar condemned the delisting, while the reason for the US decision was not stated.
