Mia Goth says Instagram let a fake AI image of her spread

Mia Goth’s representatives say a fan account posted an AI-made image of her on Instagram.

The image showed Goth in a T-shirt with a message about an ex, and spread widely after news that she had filed for divorce from Shia LaBeouf.

The account had a blue checkmark and more than a million followers, though it was labeled as fan-run, and some people and entertainment outlets treated the image as real.

Goth’s representatives say they made multiple complaints asking Instagram to remove the account, which was no longer visible on Instagram by Tuesday morning.

Meta’s rules allow some AI content labels, but do not require one for still images, including images of real people.

The incident raises concerns about confusion and the use of public figures’ likenesses, an issue actors and musicians have raised for years.

Meta had not immediately responded to a request for comment, and no further action was stated.

What people are saying

The fact that this fan account meets Instagram’s criteria to qualify for a ‘blue check’ is disconcerting on a fundamental level.

Beyond that, it is incomprehensible that Instagram evidently prioritizes the dissemination of forged and manipulated images over the protection and integrity of a public figure’s likeness.
