Indonesia orders action on suspected food price manipulation

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has told Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman to stop suspected manipulation of food prices.

Amran says chicken and eggs can sell for about 20,000 to 21,000 rupiah per kilogram from producers, but cost consumers 40,000 to 50,000 rupiah.

This gap leaves poultry farmers losing money while shoppers still pay high prices.

Thousands of poultry farmers protested on October 9, saying their sales prices were below the production costs set by the government.

Amran says similar concerns involve rice and cooking oil, and that problems in the distribution chain need investigation.

He has written to the national police chief to coordinate action, while government efforts to buy farmers’ produce and build a feed industry have not yet resolved the issue.

The government says it needs to address the suspected middlemen and distribution problems so farmers are not underpaid and consumers are not overcharged.
