Indonesian lawmaker urges national disaster status for forest fires
Forest and land fires have burned in several parts of Indonesia for about three months.
The resulting haze has affected health, schools, public activities, flights and local economies.
Daniel Johan, a member of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, urged the government to declare the fires a national disaster.
He also called for foreign assistance and temporary evacuation of children, older people and other vulnerable residents if needed.
Malaysia is among the neighboring countries that has offered help, according to Johan.
President Prabowo Subianto called ministers and agency heads to a meeting in Jakarta to review efforts to fight fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra.
The government has not said in this account whether it will declare a national disaster.

One of the measures is designating this karhutla crisis a national disaster. In reality, it has already become an international disaster.
Today [meeting] addresses karhutla, as he [the president] is taking the handling of these fires very seriously.
