16 people treated after Botox-related illness in Antalya

Sixteen people in Antalya, Turkey, were treated at Akdeniz University Hospital after becoming ill following cosmetic Botox injections in the past three months.

Their symptoms included difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, drooping eyelids and muscle weakness.

Some needed breathing machines, and three received intensive care; patients with milder symptoms were treated without being admitted.

One patient said a clinic secretary, rather than a doctor, carried out her injection, but authorities have not established who performed the other procedures.

Officials are investigating where the patients received the injections and who administered them.

Hospital specialists say Botox can cause toxin poisoning if the product or dose is unsuitable or the procedure is done by someone without the right expertise.

They advise checking that a clinic is licensed and that the product is properly approved and sourced.
