UK confirms 3,081 bluetongue outbreaks as all Scotland becomes restricted zone

The UK confirmed 3,081 bluetongue outbreaks between 1 July and 8 October 2026.

The cases were in England, Wales and Scotland, where the virus was detected for the first time this year.

Bluetongue affects ruminants, including cattle and sheep, but has no effects on people.

Since 3 October, the Scottish government has treated the whole country as one restricted zone, rather than restricting only part of the south-west.

This makes it easier to move susceptible animals within and across the area during the autumn trading season.

Animals showing clinical signs must not be moved, and officials warn that easier movement can increase the risk of spreading the disease.

Scottish authorities are relying on vaccination to protect animals, and are urging farmers to plan doses with veterinarians.
