Compromís and left-wing parties face a split in Valencia election talks
Compromís is negotiating an election deal with Podemos and United Left in the Valencia region ahead of Spain’s general election on 29 November.
The party is open to including them on its list, but it refuses to promise a similar alliance for the 2027 regional elections.
Compromís believes its own name can attract enough voters in regional contests, while it relied on an alliance with Sumar to win two seats in the 2023 general election.
United Left’s membership in the Frente Amplio, a separate political grouping, is a sticking point in talks over including its Valencian branch.
The disagreement could leave several left-wing lists competing in Valencia, rather than one united list.
The parties have until Friday to register coalitions; without a deal, Podemos and Frente Amplio could run separately from Compromís on 29 November.
Compromís is resisting a proposal to repeat any electoral alliance with Podemos and Esquerra Unida in the 2027 Valencian regional elections.
The disagreement threatens unity among left-wing parties competing to the left of the PSOE in the Valencian Community.
Compromís is open to negotiating a joint list for the 29 November general election, but wants a project it describes as wholly Valencian and free from outside interference.
Esquerra Unida wants an alliance that could also apply to the 2027 regional elections, while Compromís rejects opening that question now.
The parties have until Friday to register electoral coalitions, or Compromís could face separate left-wing lists on 29 November.
